Emancipation Day (Grenada)

Emancipation Day is the commemoration of the end of slavery in the British empire, which was brought about by the Slavery Abolition Act 1833. This was the act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom, which abolished slavery in most of the British empire, including Grenada. Oddly enough, slavery wasn't officially abolished until August 1, 1834. Emancipation day is celebrated in Grenada, and several other countries sometime during the first week of August. In Grenada, the celebrators usually dress in traditional West African attire and special dances accompanied by drumming are performed.

The African influence on Grenadian cuisine is unmistakable. One of the most widely eaten snacks available is Fish Cake. It is sold just about everywhere - including neighborhood convenience stores.
